It's finally here! The official opening of the 7th instalment is premiering at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. Performances will run January 9 - 31, 2010.

OCTOBER 31, 2009 Just a few of snippets regarding the Wingfield performances...

Author and actor come out 'Letter' perfect ...breathtaking scope and depth in their portrait of Larkspur and its inhabitants
-- The Toronto Star

a riveting and immaculately constructed little play, performed to perfection... Beattie electrifies the stage.
-- The Victoria Times Colonist

With gestures and a grab bag of different voices any impressionist would kill for, the actor is able to conjure up imaginary characters with a few deft strokes.
-- The Victoria Times Colonist

People who were treated to Beattie's talent in 'Letter' weren't disappointed with the sequel -- it was as hilarious, as entertaining as they were hoping it would be.
-- The Pinnacle, Peterborough

...just as engaging the third time round... Rod/Walt is a crowd pleaser; to use an abysmal cliche he is a ray of sunshine.
-- Monday Magazine, Victoria

... a marvellous time with good-hearted stories. Five (out of five) Stars!
-- Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star

Beattie's Walt... remains an endearing companion for a night out at the theatre.
-- Jamie Portman, Ottawa Citizen

... powerhouse acting skills... could very well be the best of the bunch... It doesn't matter if you haven't seen any other installments of the series. Wingfield On Ice is theatrical magic that needs no introduction.
-- David Lennam, Weekend Edition

... chockfull of the same puckish humour and keen eye for human foibles that made its predecessors so enjoyable.
-- Adrian Chamberlain, Victoria Times Colonist

pure comic gold... The day you succeed in packing as much laughter, thought, insight and feeling into two hours as Beattie, Beattie and Needles do, then give me a call.
-- Richard Ouzounian, Toronto Star

Beattie is astonishingly adept at transforming himself from one character to another in a matter of seconds, calling up echoes of a crotchety Walter Brennan, a gawky Jimmy Stewart or a flustered Bob Newhart
-- The Toronto Star

a brilliantly funny look at humanity... each episode appears to be more polished and intricately laid out than its predecessor... entertainment of the highest order.
-- Network Now

With his man-next-door face -- perfect for a character like Walt -- Beattie flows to other roles with a twist of the lip, the arch of an eyebrow, a different bend in the back and a wonderful array of different voices.
-- The Globe and Mail

an experience no theatregoer should miss
--CKLY Radio

Dan Needles has much the same gift for gentle comedy as England's James Herriot of All Creatures Great and Small glory.
-- The Toronto Sun

The third partner, invisible but important, is director Douglas Beattie, who keeps it all seeming simple, but actually being quite complex.
-- The Toronto Star

A kind of philosophical Will Rogers touch with a flair for the well told anecdote that is like the best of W.O. Mitchell, AND IT'S FUNNY!
-- CKLN Newswave

If you've never really enjoyed one person shows, this is the one to change your mind.
-- The Ottawa Citizen

...a highly entertaining property...audiences are giving standing ovations to Beattie's tour de force --

Rod Beattie

A veteran of fifteen seasons with the Stratford Festival (most recently in Wingfield's Inferno in the 2005 season), Rod Beattie is one of the most respected and versatile actors in Canadian theatre. His extensive credits include radio, television, film and live performances across Canada; featured roles include Felix in The Odd Couple at the Saidye Bronfman Theatre, Montreal, Johnny Pateen Mike in The Cripple of Inishmaan at Theatre Calgary, Bill in The Love List and Greg in Sylvia at the Belfry Theatre, Victoria, John Proctor in The Crucible and Father Gustave in Blessings in Disguise at Manitoba Theatre Centre, the Professor in Oleanna at the Grand Theatre and the National Arts Centre (opposite Sandra Oh) and Andy Ladd in an Ontario tour of Love Letters (opposite Martha Henry). Over the past eighteen years or so Rod's name has become synonymous with the Wingfield series which has brought him acting awards, rave reviews and sold-out houses in Toronto, London, Stratford, Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Saint John, Fredericton and a host of smaller communities across Canada. Rod and Walt made their American debuts to great acclaim at The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park in 1994. Rod is the winner of the 1991-92 "Dora" Award (best performance by an actor in a leading role) for his performance in the first three Wingfield plays.

Dan Needles

Dan Needles spent half of his childhood in the city and half on the family farm at Rosemont, Ontario. After university, he went to work as editor of the local newspaper in Shelburne where he created the character of Walt Wingfield, the retired stockbroker turned farmer, who told about his adventures on the farm in a series of weekly letters to the editor. In 1985, Dan drew from these columns to write his first play, Letter From Wingfield Farm. Wingfield's Progress followed in 1987, Wingfield's Folly in 1990, Wingfield Unbound in 1997, Wingfield On Ice in 2001 and Wingfield's Inferno in 2005. Dan writes columns for two publications these days, Petunia Valley Sideroad for Country Guide Magazine and True Confessions from the Ninth Concession for Harrowsmith Country Life. He's also the winner of the 2003 Leacock Medal for Humour for his book, With Axe and Flask, The History of Persephone Township from Pre-Cambrian Times to the Present. Dan's latest book, a novelization of Wingfield plays four, five and six, entitled Wingfield's Hope, is currently available in bookstores everywhere. It and its companion volume, a book version of the first three Wingfield plays, called Letters From Wingfield Farm, were both short-listed for the Leacock Medal in 1989 and 2005 respectively. Dan's seven-character play, The Perils of Persephone, premiered at The Blyth Festival in 1989.

Douglas Beattie

Douglas Beattie became an independent producer and director in 1979. His association with Dan Needles goes back to childhood summers spent on the farm. In addition to heading the Wingfield team, Doug has been guest director at the Stratford Festival, the Belfry Theatre, Victoria, Lighthouse Festival, Port Dover ON, Theatre Orangeville, the Blyth Festival, the Piggery Theatre, North Hatley PQ, Thousand Islands Playhouse, Gryphon Theatre, Barrie ON, and the Grand Theatre, London ON (The Perils of Persephone). He was consultant to Primedia's television production of Letter From Wingfield Farm which won the 1991 "Gemini" Award for best performing arts program and is co-executive producer of the Wingfield TV series. He is also founding Artistic Director of Touchmark Theatre in Guelph ON, and President of Douglas Beattie Theatrical Productions Ltd. which markets the audio and video recordings of the Wingfield plays.

What is WaltWingfield.com?

Monday, October 12, 2009 8:42:35 AM America/New_York

Walt WingfieldThe Wingfield Farm Series are 7 plays revolvling around the title character of Walt Wingffield, a former stockbroker-turned-farmer.

Canadian Dan Needle’s Wingfield Farm Series has been entertaining audiences for well over 20 years. An intimate and humorous look at rural life on the farm, the one-man play starring Rod Beattie doesn’t leave you wanting with a genius use of character and wit. The protagonist, Walt Wingfield is stockbroker city-boy who gets it in his head that he wants to be a farmer. He buys a 100-acre farm in the quaint township of Persephone and settles in, sounds easy enough right? As he soon finds out he finds that there is only so much one man can do with a couple of retired racehorses at the plow. Still, he embraces the less complicated life and forges ahead, everyday holding a new lesson. Delivered through a series of letters Walt writes to a newspaper editor friend about the trials and tribulations of his life as a farmer one can’t help but laugh at the antics of the elderly and antiquated town council or the helpful neighbours.

In the end the residents of Persephone band together. Beattie is a master of physical comedy and the transformation from character to character using mannerisms, ticks and voices is so complete it is like split personalities at it’s best. It is hard to believe that one man can play such a varied and rich ensemble of characters, but Beattie does it with surprising ease. If you haven’t seen The Wingfield plays you’re missing out, it’s a comedic gem, so don’t miss the chance to see it while it’s still available on CD and DVD.

We're the official retailer of The Wingfield Farm Series on CD, DVD, & other media. We're 100% Canadian! Order safely & securely today! And own this classic Canadian treasure while it's still available!
